General Services Administration Seeks to Reform Federal Contracting

In April 2014, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced reforms of the federal contracting process designed to save taxpayer funds and simplify contracting procedures. These measures include implementation of Category Management, an idea inspired by the Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative and by private-sector best practices.

In order to make Category Management a reality, the Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) will develop expertise and specialized purchasing channels targeted to various categories of products or services. A key component of the effort will take the form of the Common Acquisition Program, a digital technology platform. This initiative will provide federal buyers with a wealth of information including contract comparison tools, market research data, and pricing and purchasing data.
